Hope and Anchor Gigs September 2010

August 31, 2010

PARTICULARLY APPIER…

Paul’s just ran into HMV and nicked a copy of “To the 5 Boroughs” by the Beastie Boys… The gelatinous little sh*t came out and just went: ” WHAA?? illegally downloading is soooo last year…” I didn’t approve, but it got me thinking: time flies, and everything changes very quickly (Are we in September??? what happened!!!???) so you’ve got to keep up… and by that I mean App… That’s right, Bugbear’s in the middle of developing an App for you lovely bunch of smart phone holders so you can keep track of who is playing, have access to your favourite Bugbear bands’ media and learn about our best gigs first… It’s all in the early stages though, so appy to hear your feedback/ideas on this…

Goooosh, got a huge craving for squid. Here’s the best bands this week!!

DUBLIN CASTLE LISTINGS

THURSDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER

A BOY CALLED DORIS - Yay- very entertaining zippy zappy whacked out crazee stuff that goes between being like Grange Hill theme music comedic spazz funk to fiery new new wave. The post punk years figure large- early  XTC, Magazine b sides!, Blur, World Of Twist….great work, like their dressing up box too.

DOLLIE PRONTO- Crisp alt pop rock owing quite a lot to Kings Of Leon [before they became U2#101] Perky stop/start interplay with the guitars and agreeable differentials in their sound. Decent tunes too, a solid performance.

PSALMS- Proggy mainstream rock/pop with some touches of metal and even hiphop, but the overall effect is an progged out synth adorned rock with apocalyptic intensity- and it really works actually. One of them’s called Tom Goblin incidentally , is very elfin and mysterious looking too…

Also tonight: NICK FRANSEN TRIO

FRIDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER

DOROTHY SCARECROWTINMANLION- Somewhere between Joy Division, Bloc Party, White Lies, The Fall and Love with a punky edge… Niiiice

THE HAMPTONS - Pop rock with a hint of a folk element in some of the songs. Mariana says Frank Turner and Mumford & Sons, and a bit of U2 in some of their more laid-back tunes. Good stuff whateverwhichway..

FLIGHTLESS BIRD - Is Guildford in Loiusiana?! It should be on the strength of this…That 2 piece White Stripey template explored again – nice slide, very nice…George Thorogood eat yer heart out…great feel, the drums are kinda taking in jazz vibes too… Creedence, Cream, early Fleetwood Mac, Hendrix and all the old blues guys..seemingly all instrumental- definitely all good.

Also tonight: ANDREW BOWERS

SATURDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER

DOYLE & THE FOURFATHERS - All over 6music right now and we can well see why- 60s Moody Blues shaped croon n swoon songcraft with a  Velvetsy undertow and very nice melodies…often a  string section too, and a feel of Mumford & S had they been melded with The Divine Comedy in the old Fly matter transfer machine..groovy.

SWEETIE PIE & THE GUTTERMEN- With a nice and varied range of instruments: Voices, Guitars, Bass, Violin, Drums, Glockenspiel, Keys, Tambourine, Flute, Accordion, Ukulele ..[!!]..and an uplifting indie folk sound these guys are definitely onto a winner… Arcade Fire via The Airborne Toxic Event. Check now before they’re huuuuge…

FULL HOPE & ANCHOR LISTINGS

FRIDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER

THE ABSOLUTE BELTERS - Punky rock outfit from Portsmouth, feature observant lyrics , ‘real life’ type stuff, Gallagher ish vocals but not it’s not an Oasis like style…. high paced punk that gets you in fits of leg wobbling. Really good little band, a band that have bags of enthusiasm and passion and presence too.

FACTORY DOLLS - Punk garage typa thing. Sounds a bit like Dead Kennedys – but that’s only until the vocals kick in. Then it becomes a weirded out  punked up BRMC.

THE DISSIDENTS – Kicks off with a Noel Gallagher style arena guitar solo that complements the otherwise minimalistic backdrop of bass, rythm guitar, drums and vocals… all building up nicely to a huuuuuge chorus U2 style… There’s a smidge of Pearl Jam and 30 Seconds to Mars… And that’s just one somg! it’s kind of far out, reminds me a lot of London rap rock crossover heroes Missing Andy too..

ELEVEN FABLES - Stereophonics to the fore and a bucket full of Placebo… sits right in the middle of those 2 bands in a rocking good way.

TUESDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER

THE NAKED POLAROIDS

Electro punk in the vein of Bloc Party with hints of Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers. Youthful punk energy, great!

Also tonight: SUNDOG
